TOKYO —
Francophiles
and movie buffs are in for a treat next week when the annual Festival
du Film Français au Japon returns to Tokyo. In past years, the
festival’s red carpet has been trod by luminaries like Catherine
Deneuve and Sophie Marceau; for 2009, the delegation will be
represented by Oscar winner Juliette Binoche (“Chocolat”).
“Films can cross borders without any passports,” the actress said in
advance of the festival. “We create them to send out in the world.”
This year’s films are all making their Japan debut, with Binoche
herself starring in the opener, “L’Heure d’été,” a family drama
directed by Olivier Assayas (ex-husband of Hong Kong actress Maggie
Cheung). Other highlights include Julie Delpy’s “La Comtesse,” about
15th-century serial killer Elizabeth Bathory, which sees the actress
reuniting with “Before Sunrise” co-star Ethan Hawke; and the
comedy-drama “Versailles,” starring the late Guillaume Depardieu, son
of the renowned French actor Gerard Depardieu.
Aside from the 16 feature films, there will also be a screening of
six shorts, including the award-winning “Skhizein,” an animated work
about a boy who is struck by a meteorite and must “adapt to living
precisely 91 centimeters from himself.” Other events include Q&A
sessions, autograph signings and meet-and-greets with visiting stars
and directors.
The festival will take place March 12-15 at Toho Cinemas
Roppongi Hills. For further information, visit
