Tinariwen: A brief history
Tinariwen (Tamashek: t-i-nàriw-en "deserts", plural of t-è-nere "desert"[1]) is a band of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali, formed in 1979. In the early 2000s Tinariwen started to gain a following outside Africa, first in the world music community, and then among general international audiences, thanks to frequent tours and appearances at major festivals in Europe and the USA.[citation needed] Tinariwen's biography has variously been described as "the most compelling of any band" (Songlines), "the most rock'n'roll of them all" (The Irish Times), "hard-bitten" (Slate.com), and "dramatic" (The Independent)

Touré is the son of Malian musician Ali Farka Touré. Vieux's debut self-titled solo album, released online in fall 2006 and in retail worldwide February 2007, features Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté on several tracks. It has been acclaimed by critics worldwide; Vieux has proven in his energetic live shows that he is the heir to Ali's talent, although he has affirmed his own style. He was the flagship artist for Modiba Productions from the date of release of his debut album. His new album, Fondo, was released in May 2009 by Six Degrees Records."

Hollywood can have a pretty selective memory. Before she was an Oscar winner, Kathryn Bigelow brought us the undercover cop/surfing classic Point Break. In his younger days, Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson made some pretty gruesome films, including one about drug addicted, homicidal, and slutty puppets. These deviations are common as directors discover their range, but sometimes they stray amazingly far out of their comfort zone. As we’re about to discover, this can have some interesting results.
